For hundreds of years, the river flowed through villages and countryside. Drawings, paintings and old photographs remind us of those long-lost days. Some parts of the river are little changed today.

Notes for teachers

Archive pictures on this display show views of the River Quaggy before any concrete channels were built. Photographs and paintings can give a sense of the history of an area. A search for other images (e.g. of clothes, housing, agriculture, transport) could help build up a picture of life in your area in the past. Written accounts can also provide this insight.

  • Describe playing by the river in the rural past – imagine clothes, games, a picnic.
